Vehicle Registration Process in Tripura

Tripura, the third-smallest state in India, manages its vehicle registration through the Tripura Transport Department with RTO offices in Agartala (TR 01), Udaipur (TR 05), Dharmanagar (TR 02), Kailashahar (TR 03), and Belonia (TR 06). The Agartala RTO, serving the state capital and its growing suburban areas, handles the largest share of registrations. Tripura's unique geographical situation — almost entirely surrounded by Bangladesh except for its northeastern border with Assam, Mizoram, and Nagaland — creates distinct vehicle registration and movement patterns.

Two-wheelers dominate Tripura's vehicle population, comprising over 70% of all registered vehicles, due to the state's narrow roads, high fuel efficiency requirements, and affordability factors. The capital city of Agartala has seen a steady increase in passenger car registrations as disposable incomes rise and road infrastructure improves. The state's RTO offices have been modernising their services, with online applications and fee payments now available through the Vahan portal, though rural areas still rely on physical visits to the RTO counters.

  1. Buy the vehicle and get a temporary registration. The dealer issues a temporary registration (application in Form 20) at the time of purchase. A temporary registration is valid for a maximum of one month (Rule 47, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989), within which the permanent registration must be completed.
  2. Submit the registration application. Form 20 (application for registration), Form 21 (sale certificate from the dealer/manufacturer), Form 22 (certificate of roadworthiness), valid insurance, and proof of address and identity are filed — normally by the dealer for new vehicles.
  3. Pay road tax and fees. Road tax is a one-time payment at registration. The registration fee under Rule 81 of CMVR 1989 is ₹300 for a motorcycle and ₹600 for a non-transport light motor vehicle.
  4. Registration number is allotted. On verification of documents and tax payment, VAHAN allots a permanent number in the TR-XX-XXXX format and the RC is issued to the owner.
  5. Get the HSRP fitted. New vehicles get the High Security Registration Plate fitted at the dealer point or RTO-approved vendor before delivery.

How Road Tax Is Calculated in Tripura

Tripura charges a fixed one-time amount by price band for cars instead of a percentage rate: ₹4,100 up to ₹3 lakh, ₹4,800 for ₹3–5 lakh, ₹6,900 for ₹5–10 lakh, ₹7,550 for ₹10–15 lakh and ₹8,250 above ₹15 lakh (ex-showroom price). Two-wheelers pay a flat 4% of the ex-showroom price. This banded structure keeps road tax low and predictable for car buyers in the state, regardless of fuel type.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy

Under the current state policy used by our calculator, electric vehicles in Tripura receive a 25% rebate on road tax rather than a full exemption — for both cars and two-wheelers. For example, a car in the ₹5–10 lakh band pays ₹6,900 × 75% = ₹5,175 instead of ₹6,900. We note that some older material on Tripura's EV incentives cites a full exemption; sources conflict on this point, so confirm the current notification with the Tripura Transport Department before finalising a purchase. Registration fee and HSRP are not waived for EVs.

Given the state's relatively small geographical area, EVs are particularly well-suited for intra-city commuting in Tripura, and the state has been working with central agencies to set up EV charging stations in Agartala and other major urban centres.

Where to Pay Tripura Road Tax Online

Road tax can be paid online on VAHAN (vahan.parivahan.gov.in): enter the vehicle registration number → Online Services → Pay Vehicle Tax → validate with the last 5 digits of the chassis number → enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number → update insurance details → review the fee panel → pay. For new vehicles, the dealer point or RTO collects the tax during registration itself.

Required Documents for Vehicle Registration

For commercial vehicles, additional documents like the route permit and fitness certificate are necessary.
