How Road Tax Is Calculated in Nagaland
Nagaland applies a flat percentage-based road tax of 5% of the ex-showroom price on all vehicle categories — petrol, diesel, CNG and electric cars as well as two-wheelers. The flat structure means there is no slab system or fuel-based price difference: the tax is simply 5% of the vehicle's cost, making it easy for buyers to predict their RTO outlay.
For a mid-range petrol sedan with an ex-showroom price of ₹12,00,000, the road tax calculation is: ₹12,00,000 × 5% = ₹60,000. Adding the registration fee of ₹600 and HSRP charges of ₹400, the total RTO cost equals ₹61,000. A diesel SUV of the same price now pays the same ₹60,000 — the earlier higher diesel rate has been unified at 5%.
Electric Vehicle Tax in Nagaland
Nagaland no longer exempts electric vehicles from road tax. The earlier EV exemption has been removed — electric vehicles now pay the flat 5% life tax like every other vehicle, plus the standard ₹600 registration fee and ₹400 HSRP. An EV priced at ₹12,00,000 pays ₹60,000 in road tax, exactly like a petrol or diesel car of the same price.
Two-Wheeler Tax Rates
Two-wheelers in Nagaland pay the same flat 5% of ex-showroom price. The registration fee is ₹300 and HSRP ₹200.
Commercial Vehicle Tax in Nagaland
Commercial vehicles in Nagaland pay tax based on seating capacity — small vehicles pay a one-time amount, while larger vehicles pay per seat per year:
| Seats | Tax |
|---|---|
| 1–6 seats | ₹3,500 (one-time) |
| 7–12 seats | ₹1,200 per seat per year |
| 13 seats and above | ₹2,000 per seat per year |
